- ItemEstimation of facial soft tissue thickness in a contemporary male morgue population in Bogotá D.C.(Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Facultad de Odontología, 2004) Catalina Castillo; Katherine Hurtado; Milena Ramírez; Garzón Clavijo, Erika Andrea; César Sanabria MedinaDescriptive exploratory and comparative study aimed at estimating facial soft tissue thickness in a contemporary mestizo male morgue population from Bogotá D.C., in order to generate a local standard for three‑dimensional facial reconstruction in the identification of unknown bodies. Fifty male cadavers aged 25 to 55 years, with less than 24 hours since death, mestizo phenotype and without trauma or visible facial pathology were selected. Cephalometric landmarks were marked on each face and soft tissue thickness was measured by calibrated needle punctures; data were tabulated and analysed with Excel and SPSS to obtain mean values and ranges for each point. The results show that mean soft tissue thicknesses in the Bogotá sample are lower than those reported for classic North American Caucasoid populations, but they are consistent with previous studies on Colombian mestizos from Bogotá and Bucaramanga. The study concludes that using foreign metric standards may introduce important biases in facial reconstruction of Colombian individuals and that the tables obtained provide a more appropriate reference for forensic anthropological identification in the country.
