Using the CINEP database and the journal Noche y Niebla, the authors identify massacres with female victims, trace 72 autopsy reports and body inspection records, and review international protocols, forensic manuals, judicial case files and interviews with doctors, dissectors and other officials. The study shows that samples related to possible sexual offences were taken in only a very small number of cases and proposes ten key factors that condition the search for and collection of evidence: the institutional environment that asks about sexual violence, the prevailing conceptual framework, the way forensic medicine is practised, the connection between crime scene and autopsy room, staff training and oversight, autopsy formats, recognition of signs of sexual violence, conditions for evidence collection and the installed capacity in basic forensic units.
