- ItemPrevalence of psychic disturbance in women victims of marital violence. Bucaramanga 1999.(INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE MEDICINA LEGAL Y CIENCIAS FORENSES, 2000) LEDDY CONTRERAS PEZZOTTI; ALFONSO CARRASQUILLA CASTILLA; Leddy Contreras Pezzotti; Alfonso Carrasquilla CastillaThis study describes the prevalence of psychic disturbance in 70 women who reported their spouses for violent acts against them that occurred in Bucaramanga during 1999. Psychic disturbance was assessed using the self‑report Zung Anxiety and Depression scales and DSM‑IV diagnostic criteria, and its association was analyzed with epidemiological variables such as age, type of union, religion, schooling and socioeconomic status. Depression was found in 56 women (80% of the sample) and anxiety in 44 women (62.9%) with different intensity levels. From a forensic perspective, 8 women (11.4%) showed no psychic injury, 48 (68.6%) presented psychic damage, 12 (17.1%) transient psychic disturbance and 1 (1.4%) permanent psychic disturbance. Most women (61.4%) were examined within the first 30 days after the traumatic event, 30% between 30 and 120 days and 8.6% after more than 120 days. The prevalence of the mental disorders studied in this group of women was higher than that reported for the general Colombian population in the first and second National Mental Health and Psychoactive Substance Use Surveys.
